Procedures for Reporting Monthly Unit Safety Meetings
14 June 2008

The following is the correct procedure for reporting your unit monthly safety meeting to Group and Wing safety officers.

1. Once a month give your required 15 minute (min) safety briefing.
2. Record attendance on a CAPF 113 or 211.
3. Place a summary of the safety briefing on your unit safety board along with a sign-in sheet for those who missed the regular safety briefing.
	• Those who missed the regular safety briefing will read the summary plus any other safety information the Safety Officer deell1s necessary.
	• After the member reads the safety information, he or she will sign off on the attendance sheet indicating the accomplishment of the require activity.
4. Note - Any member not attending the unit safety meeting may not participate in any CAP or unit function or activity until the safety requirement is completed.
5. The Unit Safety Officer is responsible for tracking member-completion of the safety requirement.
6. At the end of the month, the unit safety officer will combine both lists and forward this list and the summary of the safety briefing to Group Safety Officer keeping a copy for the Unit Safety File. This report should reach your Group by the 1st of each month.
7. This completes the unit safety officer reporting responsibility:

Group Safety Officer Responsibilities
1. The Group Safety Officer has the same responsibilities as the Unit Safety officer.
2. The Group Safety Officer will track and collect all unit safety reports.
3. The Group Safety Officer will check each unit report and forward the Group Summary and attendance list along with the unit reports to Pennsylvania Wing Headquarters marked to the attention of Wing Director of Safety.
4. This Group report should reach Wing Headquarters by the 15th of each month.

The 23rd Annual Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven Fly-In will be June 17th - 21st, 2008. This annual event is the sort of 'homecoming' for Piper aircraft and aviation enthusiasts, and is held at the William T. Piper Memorial Airport (LHV) in Lock Haven, PA right next to the old Piper factory and museum. This years featured airplanes will be the J-5, PA-25 Pawnee and PA 36 Brave.

Get ready for five of the most fun-filled, educational, relaxing and social days of the year as Sentimental Journey2008 kicks off on June 17. The annual Fly-In has been expanded to five days this year, to accommodate the many visitors who arrive prior to the normal Wednesday first day. Another addition to the Fly-In this year will be seaplane landing and services. In addition to the educational forums, the daily corn boil, the nightly entertainment, the fantastic food vendors, the exhibit hall and the Schrack fly-in picnic, there will be the aviators’ favorites--a spot landing contest on Thursday and (another addition!) a bomb drop contest on Friday.

A DC-3 “Gooney Bird” will be on hand throughout the week to offer rides and tours in the historic aircraft. Live entertainment has been lined up for all five nights of the Fly-In, and Gary’s Cub Pub will be open for your enjoyment. Come early if you’re planning on camping, as campground spaces fill quickly.

If you plan on flying in, have a look at the Air Ops procedures on page 10 of the newsletter available for download here: <a href="http://www.sentimentaljourneyfly-in.com/Newsletter08.pdf">http://www.sentimentaljourneyfly-in.com/Newsletter08.pdf</a>

<img width="255" height="255" align="left" src="http://gp5.pawg.cap.gov/images/articles/20080605140320102_1.jpg" alt=""> This Saturday, June 7, AOPA is hosting its annual Fly-In and Open House at Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick, MD. We have had as many as 900 aircraft here in good weather (and we are expecting good weather this Saturday), but realistically are expecting between 300 and 500 aircraft.

We have a complicating factor this year in that the FAA is expanding the prohibited airspace over Camp David so that the restricted airspace will end just a few miles off the ends of each our northerly runways. We are pursuing every communications avenue available to us and thought CAP might be able to assist in making sure pilots flying into the Washington, DC area are aware of the restriction.

Our request to CAP would be that Civil Air Patrol members in uniform (commanders' or members' discretion: BDUs, Blues, or flight suit) be stationed at the squadron's home airport on Saturday morning and ask departing pilots 1)if they are flying to or through the Washington, DC, area, and 2) if so, are they aware of the expanded prohibited airspace over Camp David.

We are asking that National Headquarters contact Wing Commanders in Northeast, Middle East, and Great Lakes Regions with AOPA's request, and ask in turn that they pass it on to squadron commanders.

AOPA's goal for this weekend is zero P-40 airspace incursions. If, as part of AOPA's communications outreach, CAP would commit to diseminating AOPA's request, AOPA would show its appreciation in a very public way with a donation of $5,000 to the Civil Air Patrol.

We have already begun our communications outreach to pilots through our website (<a href="http://www.aopa.org">www.aopa.org</a>) and plan to begin outreach through other communications channels within the next 36 hours. If you would be so kind as to forward this request up the chain of command, I would appreciate it. I can be reached at the email above or the telephone numbers below.

Blue skies and warm temperatures are forecast to welcome you, along with thousands of pilots and hundreds of aircraft, to the premiere East Coast fly-in event—AOPA’s Eighteenth Annual Fly-In and Open House—on Saturday, June 7. So clear your schedule and celebrate the joy of flight with your fellow aviators at Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick, Md. We’ll have nearly 50 aircraft on display, including AOPA’s 2008 Get Your Glass Sweepstakes Piper Archer, a dozen safety seminars, and 100 aviation exhibits!

If you plan to fly in for the event, note that P-40, the prohibited area over Camp David, the presidential retreat northwest of Frederick, will be expanded from Friday, June 6, through Sunday, June 8. With the expanded prohibited area and nearby Washington, D.C., Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), pilots will be squeezed into a small arrival corridor.

“Early indications are that we’re going to have great weather this Saturday, so by all means, come,” said AOPA President Phil Boyer. “Just make sure you’re fully aware of the procedures and the restrictions. Let’s show the FAA and the security folks just how conscientious pilots really are.”

We’re so confident that our members will shine that we’ve developed the “Zero Airspace Incursions Challenge.”

“We don’t want to have any airspace incursions into P-40 or the ADIZ,” Boyer said. “We’ll donate $5,000 to the Civil Air Patrol, whose cadets help direct ground traffic at our event every year, if there are no incursions related to our fly-in.”

AOPA has also enlisted the help of the Civil Air Patrol to make sure pilots are aware of the restrictions. The CAP National Headquarters has asked squadrons east of the Mississippi River to station members at airports on Saturday morning and ask pilots if they are headed to the Washington, D.C., area, and ensure they are aware of the expanded prohibited area.

So, how do you take part in our challenge?

It’s simple. We’ve created step-by-step VFR arrival and departure procedures that will keep you clear of both sensitive airspace areas. We will also have a temporary air traffic control tower (120.95 MHz) at the airport from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Allow ample time for flight planning, study the route, review intercept procedures, and get a flight service weather briefing. Once you’re on your way, watch for other traffic, maintain situational awareness with regard to the sensitive airspace, and always monitor 121.5 MHz. Anyone who strays near or into P-40 or the ADIZ will be issued a heading correction and other instructions over 121.5 MHz.

We’ll be waiting for your safe arrival—a team of aircraft greeters and parkers will direct you to your parking space and fill you in on all of the great events planned for the day.

If unforecast weather or other issues arise and you decide to drive in, we also have travel and hotel information on our Web site.

We hope to see you Saturday!
