New Altoona Squadron Commander


Group 5 welcomes it's newest squadron commander, Major Thomas Chathams. Chathams (above left) accepted command of the Keystone Country Cadet Squadron of Altoona, PA during the change of command ceremony at the squadron's 7 February meeting. Special thanks go to Major Don Leipold (above right) for his service to the squadron during 2 tours as the unit commander, the most recent lasting nearly 7 years.

The Keystone Country Cadet Squadron has a long history in the Altoona area. Previous awards include the Pennsylvania WIng Squadron of Merit in 1991, as well as Spaatz cadet (now Lt Col) Rick Gray, who want on to lead the squadron and later the Group 2 commander.

The squadron meets each Tuesday evening at 6:30pm at the National Guard Readiness Center in Altoona.

New Cadet Publication: CAPP 52-23 Cadet Protection Policy Implementation Guide

Cadet Programs

CAP Pamphlet 52-23, Cadet Protection Policy Implementation Guide, has been approved and published for use in the field. Download your copy of this valuable resource from the CAP Publications page or the Cadet Programs Resource Library. CAPP 52-23 describes the advantages of the Cadet Program's military training, defines military intensity levels, and provides a suggested guide for commanders and Cadet Programs leaders to analyze difficult situations to determine the presence or absence of hazing. The principal author and editor of this pamphlet is Lt Col Ned Lee from Pacific Coast Region, currently the NCAC Liaison.

ACUT Class at Group 5 HQ

News

Group 5 will be conducting an ACUT advanced communications user training course at Group 5 HQ, University Park Airport, State College PA on Saturday 4 February. The course is open to all CAP members and will run from 0900 to 1300, and conclude with the ACUT written and oral exams.

Registration is $5.00. Sign-in begins at 0830. All participants will need to bring copies of all CAP 100 series regulations. Lunch will be provided.

February 2012 Group 5 Staff Meeting

News

Commanders and Staff,

Please mark your calendars for 25 February 2012, 1pm, for the next Group 5 Commanders call and Staff Meeting.

Topics include:

  • Recent policy and procedure changes associated with the new Wing command
  • Training schedules and funds for 2012
  • Cadet Orientation Flights
  • Operational status of each unit in the Group
  • Mission Goals for 2012
  • SUI inspection schedule and status
  • Vehicle status and reporting

The Cadet Advisory Council will also meet during this time to plan Group Cadet Events for the year. Each unit should plan on bringing their CAC rep and at least one alternate to this meeting.

If you cannot attend for any reason, please let me know in advance and send a member of your staff as a replacement. See you the 25 February at University Park Airport, General Aviation Terminal conference room. The meeting starts promptly at 1pm.
